An Outstanding Biography on a Most Misunderstood Man

A thematic look at First Ladies from Washington to ClintonSusan Maloney Clinton provides a nice collection of anecdotes about the various First Ladies. The first part of the book outlines the role of the First Lady in the broadest tersm, from the austerity of Edith Wilson to the serene loveliness of Julie Tyler, from the desire of privacy of Martha Washington to the publicity of Betty Ford's breast cancer, and from the public whirlwind that was Eleanor Roosevelt to the tragic Jane Pierce who never recovered from the death of her son two months before her husband's inaugural.
However, the last half of the book focuses chronologically on those First Ladies who acted as working partners in their husbands' presidencies, beginning with Abigail Adams and ending with Hilary Clinton's work as the head of the effort to reform health care. Clearly, in terms of public perception, things changed dramatically after Eleanor Roosevelt, especially from the time Jackie Kennedy was in the White House until now, where many Americans can tell you what was the pet issue of each First Lady, such as Lady Bird Johnson on highway beautification and Barbara Bush on literacy.
This thematic approach works well for this topic and young students research the First Ladies in general will find this a useful book. However, it will be a hit-or-miss proposition with regards to how much useful information they can find about any given First Lady.
